Grab Bag Patterns

Pattern #1 (for Regular Flat Grab Bag) 1. Cut pattern from cardboard or paper 16 x 6 inches. Then cut out material using pattern.
2. With wrong sides of material facing you, turn 1/4 inch over on the 16-inch side of material, turn again 3/4 inch and stitch. This makes the casing to run the drawstring through. (You can place the drawstring onto this seam before sewing, if you are careful not to sew into the string.) Cut about 20 inches of string and, using a safety pin or crochet hook, run the string through this casing. Tie both ends together with a knot.
3. Wrong side out, fold 6-inch sides together. Sew 1-inch seam down side and across bottom of bag. Do not sew through the casing.
4. Turn the bag right-side out; make sure the drawstring will draw. Make sure that the yarn, cording, etc. that you use for the drawstring is strong enough that it will not break.
Note 1. There are many ways to use scraps of material. They can be laid out any way on the material and seams can be made smaller. Just be sure your finished product is about 5 x 7 inches (no smaller). Kids like loud colors, so the wilder, the better. Be sure to call your club grab bag committee chairman if you need help or material. Sometimes, members donate material for grab bags.
Note 2: The pattern can be made 8 x 6 inches and the 6-inch side placed on the fold of the material -- then you do not sew across the bottom of the bag. Seams are 1/2 inch on the sides.
Note 3: Seams do not have to be as large as stated in these directions but must be 5 x 7 inches before corners are sewn.

Pattern #2 (for Sack-Bottom Grab Bag) 1. Cut a piece of cardboard 9 x 6 inches for your cutting pattern. Place on fold of material, cut out material using pattern. If your material is not big enough to fold, you can make two pieces and sew a seam where fold would be.
2. On each of the 6-inch edges, wrong side of material facing you, turn 1/4 inch under, turn again 3/4 inch, and sew seam. Do this on both ends. This makes the top of the bag and the casing to put the drawstring through.
3. Fold the material in half, right sides together, and stitch 1-inch seam on both sides of the bag. Don’t sew through the casing! Keep bag wrong side out. Bag should be about 8 x 5 inches (but no smaller than 5 x 7 inches).
4. Run your hand along the seam side with palm up. You will have a point, which is the corner of the bag. Take hold of this corner, remove hand, and stitch 1 to 1-1/2 inches off the corner. Do this on both sides. This makes the sack bottom.
5a. Cut two pieces about 20 inches long. Make sure that your drawstring material is strong enough that it will not break. Use a safety pin, crochet hook, etc. to run the string through the casing. Start at one of the openings and go all the way around, coming out where you entered. Tie a knot using both ends of the string.
5b. Do the same with the other string, starting at the opposite side of the bag. You should be able to close the bag by pulling both strings.
