TIME TRAVELLER TWO:
GENERAL COMMENTS



    I’ve been an avid astronomer in the past until getting bored of what VERY LITTLE one could see through any affordable telescope.  A few cold nights of amateur astronomy gatherings suggested that it wasn’t that great a pursuit for me at the time.  But my heart still lies in the Universe, and Hubble has helped bring it a bit closer.
    And then there are these listeners for life on other planets -- for radio broadcasts, whatever.  I was interested, but could never get through to the right people to have a “listen” of my own.  Out here, they have what’s often humorously referred to as “Seti, go home!” -- where computers listen over zillions of frequencies for years, and, from what I’ve heard so far, have found NOTHING to this date.
    E.T.A. Hoffmann, in his “THE NUTCRACKER AND THE MOUSE KING”, penned one VERY IMPORTANT phrase at the end of the original version of his dubious story.  It best translates into something like:  “....for those who have the EYES to see them.”  And this applies to EARS, too, when it comes to alien listening.  Computers are basically STUPID!  They do only what humans tell ‘em to do, and often NOT VERY WELL.  Machines won’t do it;  it takes HUMAN LISTENING -- for those who HAVE THE EARS TO HEAR -- to make these kinds of discoveries.  And if neither computer nor human knows what to listen for, those aliens can broadcast or send out other intelligent waves forever, and we’ll never know about it!
    I ran up against the bureaucratic MACHINE of no-return in trying to do a bit of my own “listening”.  But the project is very expensive, and it makes reasonable sense that the “listeners” are chosen very carefully for expertise, fame, lettered backgrounds, politics, and maybe some monetary influence far greater than the average person can afford -- in addition to competing with the numerous projects already backed up and waiting.  Joe Average ain’t got a chance for a “listen”.  But maybe some day....
