Metazoan parasites and commensals of freshwater crayfish

| A number of renowned parasitologists
are, or have been, interested in freshwater crayfish and so there are
a large number of parasites reported from freshwater crayfish. Metazoan
parasites of freshwater crayfish include digeneans (flukes), cestodes
(tapeworms), nematodes (roundworms) and acanthocephalans (spiny headed
worms). Most often metazoan parasitism is of little consequence to the
health of the crayfish unless the parasite is present in such high numbers
that they block the functioning of organs. However, some parasites which
are common in freshwater crayfish in some areas are important from a human
health perspective, eg. the digenean Paragonimus causes serious
lung infections in human and is very common in some crayfish populations
in Asia where crayfish are sometimes eaten raw. Cooking quickly kills

| The turbellarian temnocephalids,
annelid branchiobdellids and several arthropods are well known commensals
of freshwater crayfish and rarely cause disease. However, their numbers
will increase on crayfish if water quality deteriorates and/or if the
crayfish are affected by other disease conditions. Temnocephalid eggs
attach steadfastly to the exoskeleton, as do the cocoons of branchiobdellids,
and heavy infestations are problematic to crayfish farmers preparing product
for marketing. The corixids (water boatmen) are also well known for laying
their eggs on freshwater crayfish. Recently, concerns have been raised
at potential ecological repercussions of introducing temnocephalid species
into regions (including continents) new to the species with live crayfish
movements. |
