The president and founder of Ulu Wehi Agronomics is Dr. Joe DeFrank. Dr. DeFrank currently holds the rank of Full Professor at the University of Hawaii's College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources. Dr. DeFrank's area of expertise is Weed Science in Tropical crops. He has been an active member of the faculty in the Department of Tropical Plant and Soil Science since October 1983. He has conducted weed science research on many food crops and has established his reputation in Hawaii as a leader in no-tillage farming and ground cover establishment.
Consulting services dealing directly with agricultural production are offered primarily outside the state of Hawaii to avoid conflicts with Dr. DeFrank's duties as a faculty member at the University of Hawaii. Dr. DeFrank has provided expert witness services in two cases in Hawaii (testimony in deposition only). Other services include review of the Sustainable Agriculture program in Guam (1994) and review and recommendations for revegetation of highly eroded sections of the Yunnan Forest region in China (2002).
